It was a rushed take off to Tokoroa, with one of my teammates. It was the first time I had ever been selected to go to the North Island Pony Club Teams Event.
The team and all the horses were billeted. We had a comfortable place to stay. A converted cottage, used for root word stays. There were two nice paddocks with a stream.
We were up at six o’clock the next morning. Loaded the horses and make our way to the grounds.
Foxy, my 16 hand high mare was un tarryrained to agitate out of the truck. Her muscles were tense and she held her head high, snorting. It was a grave sign. Usually when she was like this she performed really strong.
The rest of the team were taking their time. But I knew to get a good dressage try on. I would need to make the most of every minute. The Team omnibus was pleased to see me mounted and ready to warm up.
I had been competing at Dressage Competitions all season. And this test wasn’t too complicated. So I knew it would be a “piece of cake”.
Foxy, was relaxed and happy. The rest of the team had mounted and were warming up. I could see they hadn’t really practised enough. But hoped things would fall into place for them.
We had our paraphernalia checked. And then the Marshall led the team out to the arenas. The trumpet sounded. It was time, for us all to start, our tests.
Foxy danced her way through the test and responded to every question, I asked of her. I could tell by the pure tone on Mum’s face, that she thought we had done well too.
Everybody, was relieved, the first phase was over. We all knew the biggest challenges were yet to come. We had been watching the sight jumping. Some were doing well. Some weren’t. And of course, the Cross Country tomorrow, was expected to be a big course.
