They are the ones with the money and land. In Kabul, it is severely frowned upon for the Pashtun to socialize with the Hazaras who are the lower servant class. The Hazaras are often uneducated and illiterate which causes them to be even more looked down upon. Such is the case with Hassan. He has to have Amir, who is literate and has some education, read to him and tell him stories. At first it seems kindred Amir and Hassan are best friends, but later they are driven apart.
