Stevensons novella tapped directly into the anxieties of the nineteenth century. Gothic fiction throws into header the idea of a fixed, stable individual identity because it insists that refining is merely a thin veneer of custom through and through which the uncanny and irrational can erupt at any moment. The gothic features legato remain prominent despite the criticism received.



Jekyll is to some period reflective of Stevenson himself, in that he is well-educated, and intelligent. He is from the same sociable class, living amongst people with great qualifications.
A prominent newspaper publisher in this novella is the powerful bond and affection between men. When women make an appearance, they are seen in subservient roles. This can be read as a representation of the social bonds which held unneurotic this male-dominated Victorian society. This may have also come from the introductory apathy shown towards his wife. Critic Andrew Lang on publication of the story implied that the marginalization of women was a necessary precursor to an adventure story.
