Stevenson wrote prolifically, despite his feverous health. Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde was created as a result of a burst of inventive energy. He copped criticism from his wife for his reliance upon gothic conventions. by and by a fierce argument, he burnt and rewrote the manuscript. The gothic features legato remain prominent despite the criticism received.
