Nutcracker was choreographed and directed by Matthew enclosure in 1992. It was performed by his company which was called adventure motion pictures which was founded in 1987. Adventure motion pictures only had 6 terpsichorers, but with backing from Opera North, Kobler Trust and Arts Council they were able to employ everyplace 20 dancers, so he had his characters playing multi roles.
Bourne was stimulate by the picture show Dead of Night with Micheal Redgrave, one of the go around stories had a ventriloquist taken over by his button up and the film Magic with Anthony Hopkins, as he was fascinated by dummy and ventriloquist relationship and how life could be breathed into something made let on of wood. The orphanage scene in act 1 was influenced by Dickenss Christmas Carol and Oliver Twist. These ideas were communicated to the audience through costume, line up and use of movements. For example the costumes were grey and looked like rags. The set was dull and dark which gave the Oliver Twist orphanage feel and the movements utilise were very child like as the dancers did lots of running, saltation and acting giddy. The piece then shifts to a wonderland where sugar and sweets ar used as a sexual awakening. Bourne portrays this in many ways.
One example of this is when the cast perform a big ensemble dance on the wedding cake, victimization the cake candles as poles. The dancers also lick themselves and other dancers utilize facial expressions to show how tasty they are.
Matthew Bournes Nutcracker required good acting skills as well as having the technical ability. When watching the piece I believe that every dancer portrayed their characters very well. I particularly enjoyed the gobstoppers dance performed in act 2. The gobstoppers portrayed these characters by acting voteless and fighting with each other. They were like stereotypical men, presented showing mood and crude gestures.
